The amount of soil to submit is at least a pint but we prefer to have a quart of soil. The best type of container is a clean coffee can, yogurt container, etc. with a clean piece of cloth held over the top with a rubber band. Some people use the original plastic lid and drill quarter inch diameter holes in it. The soil must be able to get air at all times and be kept away from heat. If the soil runs out of air, then the soil is likely to have an invalid nitrogen reading.
The normal turn-around time for a soil sample is 7 days. Rush order service is available during April, May, and June. Rush orders for home gardens must be dropped off at Crop Lab by noon on Monday or Tuesday each week. Call 406-607-0355 for more details.

About 95% of our garden clients request that the recommendations only include organic materials free from synthetic contamination. We advise clients on how much of each supplement to use and where to find organic nutrient sources. ... Incidentally, we were the first local experts to alert clients about historic PFAS contamination in some Montana compost sources. The original lab work was initiated and sponsored by Anna Rau of the PBS station in Missoula. The story first broadcast in 2023 and we published an editorial on in in 2024.
Every successful garden or crop field starts with healthy soil.
In the spring, many gardeners across Kalispell and the Flathead Valley begin preparing soil for planting — adding compost, fertilizer, or amendments without knowing exactly what their soil needs. A professional soil test removes the guesswork.
Soil testing helps you:
• Understand nutrient levels before planting
• Identify pH imbalances that affect plant growth
• Avoid over-fertilizing or under-fertilizing
• Improve vegetable yields and flower performance
• Prevent plant diseases that are more likely when soils contain excess nutrients from manure, compost, or synthetic fertilizers
• Reduce the risk of high nitrate levels in certain vegetables, which can occur when soil nitrogen is too high
High nitrogen levels in soil can lead to elevated nitrates in vegetables. Excess dietary nitrates are a known risk factor for cancer in humans. Surprisingly, even organically grown vegetables can contain high nitrate levels when soil nutrients are unbalanced.
If your plants struggled last year or your vegetables did not produce as expected, a soil test is the first step toward correcting the issue.
Testing early in the season allows you to make informed adjustments before seeds go in the ground — saving time, money, and effort.
For gardeners and growers throughout the Flathead Valley, soil testing provides a clear plan for healthier soil and stronger growth all season long.
